Some Thoughts on CRoW

by Tom Denney

May 28 sees another 91 square miles of our National Park open to walkers – surely something to be welcomed? Personally, I love to walk on the moors and will enjoy using my new right (although having been born on the edge of the moors I’ve always felt free to do so anyway). However, CRoW [Countryside Rights of Way] may lead to more disturbance on the moors, particularly by dogs not on leads – which happens already. Perhaps my views are coloured by the fact that our intake is now designated open country. We appealed against CRoW as we should like to have had more control over land we believe botanically important. We have no problem with people who are “ecologically aware” visiting our intake, and as it is off the beaten track we don’t expect many walkers to stray on it anyway. Now only time will tell what the impact will be, and it may not be in our lifetime, as CRoW it seems is forever!
